View Full Version : Disappointed with the monitor
Douma 08-20-2005, 06:19 PM i'm very disappointed with the monitor of the pc(Nec Multisync V720).
Yesterday i gave a CD at a photo lab and when i took the photos, they were with no contrast and dark, but on the screen they looked fine.Have you ever checked your photos?Do they look similar in contrast with these you take from the photo lab?
The photo lab might be wrong ;)
One way to check is when you print your photos, do they look like on the screen? If not, you certainly need to calibrate your monitor.
Here is a tutorial about it:

There are different tools for correcting your screen at

Olly if the photo lab is wrong,so my printer would be wrong too.I have the same problem with the printer and thought that the photo lab would be the solution.
I have calibrated the moniton hundred times, when the monitor is properly adjusted i can see the photos very well, but when i print them, they would turn out dark :( ...and when i calibrate the monitor according to the printer, then the photos on the screen would look dark
Colleen 08-21-2005, 12:16 AM I have a Samsung SyncMaster 192N 15 inch the colors are very true and my print HP psc 2110 printers prints them exactly as I see them on the screen. Hubby has a BENQ FP931 15 inch and his colors are not nearly as good as mine.
Maybe your photos are really dark? Can you upload one of them so we can all see? :)
Here I use a 17 inch Dell monitor and it is fine. In France it is a 21 inch Mitsubishi monitor (fine too).

This photo looks great on my monitor
http://www.megapixelworld.com/photography/showphoto.php?photo=1237&cat=500&ppuser=3
this is how it turned out from the photo lab http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a211/savra/savra/print.jpg
which one is better on your screen?
The photo uploaded here looks better on my monitor. It is more "dynamic".
I think your printer and your photolab aren't great ;)
Colleen 08-21-2005, 06:55 PM Sophia, both pictures look very good on my monitor.
Douma 08-21-2005, 07:13 PM Now i really don't know what i have to do,if i calibrete the monitor according the photo lab and printer,my screen would be dark
The only way i can think is to post-processing a photo on photoshop to look fine on screen, save it,and then i have to post-processing the same photo with more contrast and brightness and save it in another file only for printing....double work
To me the megapixel world photo looks much better. It seems to have better colour. The other photo looks slightly darker, less alive somehow. I do quite know how else to put it.
Colleen 08-22-2005, 12:48 AM Ok, I put them both side by side and asked everybody here and the one on your monitor is more vibrant for both pictures look good.
Douma 08-22-2005, 04:01 AM Thanks for your help checking the photo on your monitor! As the photo uploaded here looks better on your screen too, then the problem must be at the photo lab and printer, not the monitor.
I will give the CD at another photo lab to see
Thanks for your help! :)
Douma 08-22-2005, 11:29 AM The problem is solved by itself!
At the morning as i was pushing the button on the tower of the pc,the monitor explosed  I heard a pop,and it flashed and smelled burnt.
The bad think is that i have to spent money, but the good part is that i get a brand-new monitor and after the first shock now i'm exciting :D
Colleen 08-22-2005, 11:49 AM OH NO! poor you. Well an expensive way to get a new monitor for sure. Is it not under warranty? could you not get a new one maybe a different model? Why did it blow up? You don't want your new one to blow up too.

It isn't under warranty,i had bought it 5 years ago.Now i'm among the Nec Multisync LCD1770 NX
http://www.nec-mitsubishi.com/coremedia/generator/index,realm=Products__Details__Specification,spec= x__uk__en,docId=87462,type=all
and the LG L 1780Q

Douma 08-22-2005, 05:46 PM Thank you Elyse :) Viewsonics is the first monitior that i had got and i have it at work
These two monitors are what the man from which i always buy the computers etc. recommended. He told me that these are very good and worth value. The Nec costs 335 euro +tax and the LG costs 349 euro +tax.
I have not chose yet, tomorrow i'm going to call him and we see :)
Sorry to hear about your monitor. The same thing happened with my TV years ago! I would go for the NEC compared to the LG. I have no experience with LG but on cellphone magazines usually the screen of the LG is not great.

Thank you Olly,i appreciate your opinion.Searching i have found that many amateur photographers recommend the NEC 1980 SXI or the NEC 1970 GX,but both are expensive for me.
I think i will go for the NEC 1770NX
Why not a CRT monitor? :)
I know they are a little outdated (they take a lot more power) but the quality is good. With LCD monitor, if you do not have a good one, it can be annoying with the black not being really black per example.
By the way, in France the NEC MultiSync 1770NX costs 299.90 euro tax included:

I will take the risk to buy a LCD monitor, because i always want one, better design,it's better for the health of the eyes, and now that you told me that the CRT takes a lot more power i would add another reason to take a LCD :D
What i love on my laptop is the screen.Hope the monitor that i will get, would be good :)
If i buy the monitor from another country,it would be more expensive as i have to pay at the post, last year my daughter sent me two books from London and i paid 30 euros at the post office
Colleen 08-23-2005, 11:51 AM My Samsung is an LCD and the colors are really good. Moe's LCD is a BENQ and the colors are good too. Very true to life. I don't think I could go back to CRT monitor now.
Sophia when I shop for a monitor I go in the store and check all the brands out with the same picture and look for the best color.
Douma 08-23-2005, 02:41 PM Colleen i hope mine will be good too,i just order the NEC :D
aeolos 08-24-2005, 07:28 PM I use a NEC MultiSync LCD1920NX and I am very happy with it. So I guess you don't have to worry about your NEC monitor Sophia.
It's true also that CRT's are becoming a thing of the past. But still there are some good ones on the market even though they are big and ugly! :D
Douma 08-24-2005, 07:50 PM Panayoti the monitor is great,i'm happy too :D I set the colors on sRGB,the temperature on 6500K,contrast on 32.8 and brightness on 48.3.Have you any advice on settings?
aeolos 08-25-2005, 10:36 AM Sophia,
Just check to see if your monitor is equipped with a DVI output. If this is the case then I would suggest buying the corresponding cable (if not included in the packaging) and go ahead that way. You'll get a crispier and detailed picture, believe me. The monitor takes full control to adjust everything digitally and in fact all you have to do is "play" with the contrast if you like. Otherwise auto contrast is available too. If you go that way a screen page with a lot of whites will do the job for the Auto-adjustment.
Good luck with your testing!

There is a DVI output but the cable is not included in the package,i will try to find one.
Sophia: good to hear you like the new monitor!

Indeed! It is even becoming hard to find CRT monitors on online stores here. I might be one of the few here still using CRT monitors :D
