View Full Version : Action shots
Checkers 11-05-2005, 08:12 PM Ok whats the best conditions to take action photos in? Ive read the other post here about the settings, but I dont think I can change the shutter speed etc on my camera. I have it on action mode though.
Is it best to take them when its sunny or cloudy? Flash on or off? Should I move the camera with the subject (Lily of course) or wait till she comes into view (which would probably be quite hard lol)?
Any general tips on taking them?
Or one of you pros could just take a visit to NZ and take some for me :D That would be great!
High light conditions are the best for taking action photos and freezing the subject! :)
If the light isn't great and you move the camera with the subject when you take photo, you can get a great panning "action" photo (Lily will be in focus and the rest of the photo will be blurry). Of course, this won't work if Lily is coming to you.
You can read more about it at http://www.ephotozine.com/techniques/viewtechnique.cfm?recid=221

I don't know if i delay to push the button or it's a fault of my camera but i will take very good sharp photos when i move the camera with the subject ...here Avra just turned and i followed her http://www.megapixelworld.com/photography/showphoto.php?photo=893&cat=500&ppuser=3 and here she runs parallel with the camera and i followed her
http://www.megapixelworld.com/photography/showphoto.php?photo=693&cat=500&ppuser=3
but when i wait untill she comes in my view, usually her face is a bit out of focus and the rest of her body is sharp
I really wonder if it's me or the camera
Great photos Sophia!
Here is a panning photo I took in Ireland:

The shutter speed was slow and by following the bus at the same speed I managed to keep the bus sharp while the backgroud is blurry which gives a speed/wind effect :)
Checkers 11-07-2005, 10:15 PM Avra makes an awesome subject :D Great photos.
Ok I get the panning thing, but what about if she is coming straight for me? Is it just a "click and hope it doesnt come out blurry?" :)
Im waiting for a sunny day to try it out, damn clouds.
but what about if she is coming straight for me? Is it just a "click and hope it doesnt come out blurry?" :)
That will not work if it is not sunny. A flash can freeze an action though :)

Douma 12-17-2005, 10:26 AM Nice action shots!I love boxers running :D I think it's better it wasn't a sunny day,i don't like the harsh sun when taking photos.I saw the EXIF of the second photo
f 4
ISO 80
1/500
It's very well done. What better results would you take at a sunny day?Lily is frozen in this photo :D
