I saw that many of you have bird (and squirrels)feeders in your yard and take photos when the birds come to eat,i want to do the same, but i have not yard as i live in the first floor,so i placed a piece of bread on a climbing plant outside my window, there where some sparrows, doves and a kind of a wild canary used to sit,but they have no regard for the bread,i think that they afraid since i opened the curtain and they are able to look inside
Three days now without luck  Any advice?

I have four in my window here in the office. (will take a picture to show you) I have a feeder hanging in the tree and a suet feeder too also I have the kind you stick on the window. They love seed. Mostly I buy seed with fruid in it that is their favourite. The squrriels and blue jays love peanuts. My blind is always open in the office so I can watch them. I also have feeders in the back yard too. Don't give up once they know there is seed they will always come back.

Do you believe i have to place some fruits insteed of the bread?I would like to take photos of the sparrows or better of little wild canary, not the doves

If they are finches, they eat niger seed. I buy in a bag fruid and nuts for birds. Did you get the pictures?

I bet if you left something really tasty like a home made pie they would come ;)

Id go for bird seed too. Or pastry. Birds love pastry :)

I just bought a new suet feeder where you can push suet bars through it. Also big bars of mixed seed and fruit for the woodpeckers. I love feeding the birds.

I will try with a piece of apple as soon as it stops raining.I don't think i will see woodpeckers out of my window,i would be lucky,if some wild canaries come here,in my neightbourhood there are only buildings around without green, but olives and lemon trees
I didn't know that they love pastry

Lol I just say that because when I was at school and had a pie for lunch the birds would always fight over the left over pastry ;) I think that goes for most baked goods though.

Sophia, I buy what they call trail mix, it has fruits and all kinds of nuts, the blue jays and cardinals, woodpeckers etc like that. The little canaries or finches love niger seed. The doves eat everything that falls on the ground. The sparrows and grackels like mixed seed. We also have seaguls, crows, which eat anything, they never come to a feeder but I throw bread, even apple pie:D on the garage roof and they will eat it. Did you buy a feeder that sticks to the window?

First i thought to buy this kind of feeder, but then i thought that i couldn't take a photo, because the feeder would be between the camera and the bird, and this is what i did http://photobucket.com/albums/a211/savra/test/?action=view&current=772f5051.jpg but seems that they don't like the apple or it's very soon and i have to wait. They fly over there, but don't sit on the branch to eat the apple
I think that i have to buy a trail mix :)

If you could put a small feeder with some seed in it I think they will eat it. I have a special thing to hold apples but they never eat it. Or if you can hang suet that comes in a net already.

Sophia you need to give them time to find the feeder. Most birds that eat from feeders tend to have a route that they follow from feeder to feeder and it can take them awhile to find a new source of food source.

I would get one of the feeders that you can stick on your window with a suction cup. A feeder that can can feed a variety of seeds, like millet and black oil sunflower seeds is often a good choice to start with. Niger can be a good choice for finches, but it usually requires a special feeder as the seeds are so tiny. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a feeder until you figure out what kind of seeds are popular.

This site will give you and idea of all the window feeders that are available:

Good luck

Thank you Jan!Tomorrow i will ask the salesman at the petshop what kind of seeds i have to buy,we have not many kind of birds and i suppose that he know what i have to get.

I would just get a cheap feeder to start with. :) You can usually get a Niger feeder that is just a mesh bag and should be fairly cheap. You might need to look around to find it or maybe even buy it online. You could even make your own.

Thats strange. Maybe they are just curious about the new place and it will take time for them to realise they wont die in there :p

Maybe putting it closer to the edge?

Yes, Sophia a awesome bird picture for sure. It could be a finch but looks for like a sparrow? We have house finches and North American Gold finches here but they are not around right now. What do you think Jan? it takes a while sometimes for birds to come but once they know the place they will always be back. I look out at mine right now and the stupid squrriel is sitting it it :)

Colleen

Sophia, speak of the devils, the finches are at my feeder!!! I just took a picture of the feeder with them on it through my window and uploaded it to my gallery, sure looks like the same bird. You can also see the seed that they eat, Niger seed, very small.

Colleen i would prefer the squrriels than the birds for sure, but unfortunatelly there are not squrriels here where i live. They are so cute and if i had the option i would chase them with the camera :D
The bird in your gallery looks the same like this that i have in mine

Most people don't like the squrriels because they get in the feeders and eat all the food:D I don't mind them after all they have to eat too!

Maybe if you leave your camera set up a tripod all ready to take a photo, you may eventually get lucky. You will probably take a lot of photos of the tree. :) I get a lot of pictures of the bird feeder with nothing there. :(
