I have a laptop Toshiba Pentium II with 64mb RAM and windows 98,without a CD or DVD burner and i use it only in the connection to internet.
The Ram is not enough for anything, and when i put a cd to see the photos on the screen the things are very slow.

I'm thinking to formating it,put more Ram and windows XP.I don't want to do image editing,i just want to connect the card reader and transfer my photos from the camera using the card reader when i'm not home, choosing these that i like and deleting the rest,so i will keep in the memory cards only these photos that are good.

Is it worth to spent money for this or the processor is too old(PII)and will be slowly even if put more RAM?
If the pc would be slow or fast, depend on the Ram or the processor?

A Pentium II ? :( It must be painfully slow. I'm not sure that more RAM will help all that much and I doubt that you can add XP to it. I would certainly make sure that you check before you get it. I also don't think it is necessary, if all you want to do add photo's on the road. I think I would stick with Windows 98. More RAM maybe.

You will probably get better advice from other people. :)

More RAM would make things go a little faster, although I'm not sure if it would be as fast as you want. I'm thinking the extra RAM would act like a buffer for the information untill it could be written to the drive. How much more RAM can you add? You should find out before you decide. Upgrading to XP wouldn't do much for speed and if you are just looking to store photos on it, I'm pretty sure XP takes up more of your hard drive so you would just be losing storage space.

I thought about XP because i could open the photos without any other software like ACDsee or photoshop, thus i don't need to add any other "heavy"software on the hard disk, but it's not necessary,i could keep the windows 98 if i would transfer and see the photos on the screen fast and easy.
I'm confused about RAM and processor,i don't know what it's needed for a faster pc

Do you know how much more RAM you can add? I'm wondering how much room you would have to add memory in a laptop. More RAM will make your pictures load faster.

And I posted before I saw this.

I think you are limited by space inside the laptop. I would definitely find out before I decided anything.

I did it once and the laptop almost crashed and on the screen appeared the message"there is lack of memory"(or something like that)

If you added more Ram it might work. I would think that it would take a lot less memory than XP

Do NOT install Windows XP! It will make your laptop slower as the processor isn't fast enough and you might have hardware not compatible with XP (and XP takes about 1,5GB of space!).
The only thing that is worth doing is adding more ram as you wrote. It is not unlimited ;) It depends on the motherboard your laptop uses.
At http://www.crucial.com/eu/ you can check (if your laptop is still listed) how much ram you can still add.
Another thing you can do is to change the hard disk. You can get a 5400 or 7200 rpm 2.5 inch hard disk. Yours is probably a 3600 or 4200 rpm hard disk. It can make the laptop significantly faster and if your laptop breaks, you can still get a USB hard case for using it as an external hard disk. It won't be a waste of money.

I had a similar problem with my old Dell laptop which is a Celeron 700 running on Windows Me. Upgrading from 64 Mb to 256 Mb was useful. I upgraded to XP and had hardware troubles (not compatible with XP) causing reboots. I am back to Me now and it is working fine. I am also only using it for the internet. It is very slow for viewing photos, especially when they are large. Also, it takes forever to download into the laptop because it is still in USB 1, not 2.

Interesting site Olly. It told me that I can have up to 1024MB of Ram. Now if I could just remember how many I have already have or at least remember how to find out. I know it says somewhere. :(

Okay, I looked and my laptop has 512MB and I can double it. I wonder if it would make it much faster?

What version of Windows is it running? It is mostly with 2000/XP that the memory can really be used. I think with Windows 98 or Me going over 256 Mb does not help (Windows does not use them if I remember well).
A new hard disk can help as they have improved them well. Old laptops are using 4200 rpm drives with only 2mb cache while now you have 5400/7200 rpm drives with up to 16mb cache...

Thank you for the site Olly.I found that i can add only 128 mb.I don't think it's worth the try :(

Probably not! Instead of trying to upgrade it, it would be better to wait until the middle of next year so you can get a laptop with the new windows vista installed. Laptops are less and less expensive now, so in 6 months it should be good :)

I wanted to wait until the release of the next windows but couldn't because of a risk with my portable hard disk. I ended ordering a IBM this afternoon. It's not fancy but it should do its job. It is like the one at http://www.laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=73&part=full&page=1 but with a slightly more powerful processor and a 60GB hard disk.

What about the screen? Is it a TFT?

Olly

It is a 15" TFT, which is like the 4 years old Dell I have.

A 15'' screen would be nice to post-processing and view your photos.:)
