I have ordered that ultra wide angle lens yesterday. It will give an equivalent of a 15-30mm on the Nikon D70. I can't wait to get it. The widest lens I had before was the Coolpix 5000 with the WC68 converter giving a 19mm.
I hope DXO will release soon a module about that lens to correct the distorsion!

Sounds great. I guess it would be good for all the scenery and city scapres you take pictures of. can't wait to see pictures that you take with it. When is it coming?

It should be coming tomorrow (it's 10 pm right now) :)

Still waiting for it!
I do not think it is an excellent lens for photo quality but it is the widest available that is not a fish eye. According to the magazines I have, the center of the photo is always sharp but at the border it is soft especially when wide open (not to mention vignetting/distorsion). From f8 to f11 things are better :)
I hesitated a lot between it and the Sigma 12-14 which works on film cameras and the Tamron 11-18 which is apparently sharper but with a slower lens (F4.5) and a smaller zoom range.

I also think you need a wide angle because with 28mm (becoming a 45 on the Canon 20D) you have to be far to take photos of a building!
I think the 10-20 will be good on the Nikon and using the Sigma 18-200 on the Canon, I cover a range from 10mm to 200mm (15mm to 320mm) without having to change lenses (reducing the risk of dust on the sensor).
I still need a macro lens and then I have everything. Well, I also want something like the Canon 100-400mm or the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (because I already have the Sigma converter x1.4)...

I thought to get a Canon 17-40 4L as Chrismas present,but...next year :)

Still not very wide! It would be a 27mm on the 20D :)
What about the Canon 10-22?

I thought the 17-40 because it said it's one of the best wide angle lens and i wanted to use it as an everyday lens, but until the day i get it,i will search again and again :D

I have to read about that lens in Chasseur d'Images. If I remember well, there was some huge distorsion at wide angle.
Still waiting for the lens. The delivery should be done within 2 hours I think.

The lens arrived while I was upgrading the board :D
It came with a little protection bag and a lens hood. It feels solid. Now playing a little with it :D

Well, the weather isn't great but this weekend I can go to the National History museum so you can see how wide it is. It's fun, you have to be careful not to have your feet in the photo :D and the distorsion is very acceptable (much better than the Coolpix 5000 and its wide angle converter giving 19mm).

Looking your photos i think it more sharp and the details appear better than your 18-200.Isn't it?
I want a wide angle lens too!! :D Did you take a photo of a human or animal with that lens?

Olly
12-27-2005, 05:09 PM
I am not sure if it is sharper than the 18-200. I think it depends on the range and focale you are using.
Here are three more photos taken with that wide angle:
The Manneken Pis:

The Royal Palace:

Here are two photos of seagulls taken with that lens. I was zooming at 20mm (which is still wide compared to plenty of lenses) because taken at 10mm we would only see little dots :D
I find its autofocus very fast.

For that one, the F-stop is 5.6 (aperture wide open as it was taken at 20mm).

Do you use it with your Canon?I like this lens very much!

Olly
12-29-2005, 12:02 AM
No, I took it with the Nikon fit. Why the Nikon? Because with the D70 you magnify by only x1.5 and with the Canon 350D it is x1.6... I wanted to have the widest angle possible with 15mm. The difference between 15 and 16 mm seems low but it is still very visible when you take photos :D

Douma
12-29-2005, 05:52 AM
I didn't know that the Nikon is x1.5,i thought it's the same x1.6 like the Canon.

Olly
12-29-2005, 11:02 AM
If I remember well, Nikon, Minolta and Pentax are x1.5 (it is a little more than 1.5 in fact), Canon are x1, x1.3 or x1.6 depending on their sensor, Sigma are x1.7 and Olympus are x2.

Douma

I wonder why someone would choose a camera x2  Whice one of the Canon digital is x1?

Olly
12-29-2005, 08:08 PM
I wonder why someone would choose a camera x2
Because it is much lighter :)
Imagine, with a 300mm f2.8 you get the equivalent of a 600mm f2.8.
You can read more about the Four Thirds system at
http://www.four-thirds.org/en/index_01.htm
Olympus is a little behind now as their E1 is aging but there will be a new version that can be really good. As with all Olympus, they have a dust cleaner that vibrates on the sensor.
See their nice choice of lenses at http://www.olympusamerica.com/e1/sys_lens_150mm.asp :D

Whice one of the Canon digital is x1?
The new EOS 5D and the EOS-1Ds Mark II are full frame 35 mm size sensor. With them, your 28-135mm will really be a 28-135mm :D
Unfortunately they are very expensive for now.

Douma

Imagine, with a MM F.8 you get the equivalent of a MM F.8.

Yes,that was i thought,a camera for wild life and sport photographers, and what about landscape and wide angle lenses?

As with all Olympus, they have a dust cleaner that vibrates on the sensor.

I wonder what are Canon and Nikon waiting

Olly
12-30-2005, 09:49 AM
They have a large choice of lenses. Take a look at the left on that Olympus page. You can get something like the 7-14 f4 which gives a 14-28 mm :)
http://www.olympusamerica.com/e1/sys_lens_714mm.asp

As for Canon and Nikon not having the anti dust, I really do not understand!
Imagine a dust on the new EOS 5D: I believe because it has a full frame sensor the dust will appear bigger not to mention more risk for getting dust as the sensor is larger too...
Olympus and Sigma were smart to included something against dust.

Olly, what was the cause of the blur on the right and left sides of the photo?I didn't notice this on the other photos you took with this lens

Olly
01-05-2006, 09:24 PM
I think it is from PTlens when it modifies the photo because it does not crop and resize. I have to check the real photo which is on another computer. Keep in mind it was taken at 1/20 at 1600ISO without a tripod so any shake can make a photo blurry.
I am still waiting for DXO to release a module for that lens.

Douma
01-06-2006, 08:23 AM
Maybe it caused from the PTlens,i have not used it.
This plugin is somewhere installed in the hard disk of my pc,but i couldn't make it work :o If remember well,it asked me to install a file in the windows/system,something that i would never do

Olly
01-06-2006, 06:48 PM
I used the stand alone version of PTlens. I am really not convinced by it compared to DXO.
I uploaded the photo not modified by PTlens (but compressed) and the blur you see is because of the noise (1600 ISO):

I don't understand how you do not have yet a wide angle! ;)
The widest you have is the 28-135 and 28mm with the 20D represents 45mm.
You should at least get something like a 18-50mm :)

Thank you for the comment about that cat. He was very curious about the camera :D

I wonder if there is something wrong with the compatibility of the camera and the Sigma lens
