Two years since i have my camera i have never given to print my photos at a photo shop,i have an Epson stylus photo 830 and i have printed the best of my photos there.
All the photos that i have put in Albums or in frames are in perfect condition but some other without care became almost green
The best paper that i have found is the Epson Premium Glossy.

I only print out the ones I want to. I have a HP SC2110 all in one and it prints out real nice pictures. I also have a powershot that I can take with me anywhere and print out a picture if I need to. I can't remember the last time I went to a photoshop.

I don't print very many photo's. Only if I want a print for some reason. I have a HP 934C and an HP 1350, which both print so so photo's. One day I would like a really good photo printer.

I sometimes print at home, sometimes with online photo printing companies when they offer a discounted rate ;)
I have a Canon 820 printer. It prints well and has the borderless feature. It uses 6 ink cartridges which is nice as you can remplace only the ones that are missing ink. I also have a HP PSC 2410 which is an all in one (printer, scanner, copier and fax machine) but it doesn't print that well. The colours are fine but you can see some traces on the prints.
The best paper I use is the Canon Pro. It's pretty tick.
The problem I have with both of them is that the prints have a tendancy to fade when they are exposed to air and sun.

I really can't understand why they don't produce a home-printer with the
same chemical which the photoshops use to finish the photopaper so that they won't become green or fade

I remember many many years ago I received an instant camera for Christmas where you take the picture and it comes out right away. Every film came with a little bottle and brush, after you would take your picture you would brush this liquid over it to preserve the picture. I still have some of the pictures and they still look good for over 30 years. I know they don't come like that any more....

Lisa: yes, if you frame all your printed photos and keep them under a glass :)
I think the contact with air is the main problem. There is an excellent Epson printer for photos with some new ink but it costs a lot, same for the ink. Finally I wonder if it's not less expensive to get them printed at the stores... It is certainly the case for 6x4 prints, if it is larger, I am not that sure.

Colleen: was it a Polaroïd? I had one I got from my grandfather but I don't remember the little bottle and brush you mention, and the photos are fading.

I strictly use an online photo lab - a division of Millers Professional - http://www.mpix.com - Good prices compared to a local professional lab here in my area (and I never have to leave the house). The quality is outstanding - they print on professional Kodak Endura paper - your choice of either the matte surface or the new metallic paper. They also offer true b/w paper for great b/w images!!
