I try to remember to pay attention to these things:
"Do"
keep the sun to my back
check the ISO and all of the camera settings
check the background for distractions and not just the main subject
control the light
check the edges of the frame
check the shutter speed

"Don'ts"
DO NOT SHAKE WHEN I PRESS THE SHUTTER(i have to remember it all the time)
Do not cut off the feet
Do not take a photo of an animal of children from a high perspective
Do not centre the image

That's all i can think. What are the things you pay attention when taking a photo?

Do not centre the image

Why is that?

it's not a rule but i think it helps to take a better photo, here is an example of what i mean

I believe the lighthouse is better at the left corner than on the center of the photo

it's not a rule but i think it helps to take a better photo, here

I believe it's called the Rule of Thirds. Here is an article on it.

If you do a search on Google you will find a whole lot of articles on it.

Ahh I see. I wondered if it had something to do with focus, but I see what you mean :)

Thanks for the article Jan.

Jan you are right about the rule of the thrirds, but i didn't mean that,i just try not centre the subject, even if without the rule of the thrirds.
My example was not so good to discribe what i meaned, here is a better one
