It looks great! Finally a digital SLR with an inbuilt image stabiliser AND a dust cleaner. If Nikon or Canon do not have the anti dust system in their next SLRs, I might become a Sony user :)

There is no review about it yet. It is too new but I think it will be a good camera: Minolta was an excellent SLR maker, they had some great lenses and Sony is good at making sensors (the new Nikon 200D is using a Sony sensor, my D70 too etc). They can use some Carl Zeiss lenses as well :)

It sounds like it will be an interesting camera. It's still not out yet, but there is a review here: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraDetail.php?cam=879 There still isn't a lot of detailed info yet. I like the idea that the sensor has a dust cleaner. It sounds like an excellent idea considering the problems that you have had Olly. :( I'm starting to think that I would like a DSLR and it might be a possibility.

The link you posted is still a preview :)
Sony does not allow them to post a real review yet. You have another preview at http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/alpha100.html
I can't wait to read the reviews. I want to know its autofocus speed etc.
As for dust, I got them again lately. When you take normal photos, they do not appear on the photos but if you take photos of sky, they will show up... The Canon 350D gets the dust a lot more than the Nikon D70. I wonder if it is coming from the memory card place as it is built in a very cheap plastic.

Once you get a SLR, it is hard to go back to a bridge camera and its video viewfinder. I was in Paris a few days ago and tourists asked me to take photos of them in front of the Eiffel tower with a 10x zoom bridge camera and I couldn't see them well in bright light (too much contrast). As I could frame the tower, I knew they were in the picture. LOL

You are so right!!

The same happened to me when a tourist asked me to take a photo of him a few days ago in Athens :D

The review has been posted. Not a bad camera at all :)
It would have been better with less noise at high ISO but it still looks very good.

I am starting to seriously thing about buying this camera. What lense(s) do you think I should get. I think I would like at 70-300mm and maybe a macro lense. Should I take the lense that comes with it? It's an 18-70mm.

My brothers going to buy my Panasonic off me. :)

A 18-70 lens is always useful and they are usually sold cheaper in kit than when you buy it separately. It is the equivalent of a classic 28-105 on film SLRs.
But wait before buying it as there will be many new cameras for the Photokina show (from 26th September to 1st October). Prices of that Sony will be lower and it is possible the new Canon SLR that will replace the 350D/Rebel XT will have 10MP and a dust cleaner as well :)

Too late, I already bought it. I considered the fact that it would get cheaper down the road. When it comes to electronic stuff, it always gets cheaper later and then they bring out newer models. Being the impatient type, once I decided that I wanted it, I went and bought it. I also got it with the the 18-70 lens. I decided it would be useful. They didn't have the 75-300 in stock yet, but I definitely want one. I will probably have to order it. :) I have taken a few photos, but I haven't downloaded them yet. I will post some if they turn out. :)

Yes, you are right about electronic stuff being always cheaper and anyway, you can't be wrong buying that Sony because it really offers a lot (dust cleaner, image stabiliser, 10mp) for its price. It was highly recommended on dpreview.
As competitors there was the Nikon D80 (10mp, but no image stabiliser, no dust cleaner) and the coming soon new Canon SLR.
Starting with no lenses, you could choose any brand and you chose the best value I believe :)

The Minolta 75-300 was very well rated in Chasseur d'images compared to the Nikon/Canon equivalent.
The Sony macro lenses are very expensive here. Don't forget it is possible to use Sigma macro lenses for almost half price (and all macro lenses are usually very good in term of image quality).

What's your first impression? It must be very fast compared to the Panasonic, no? :D

Yes it seems very quick. It's a noisy though compared to the Panasonic :( All I have taken is pictures of hummingbirds. I think I will download the pictures now. :) I hope some turn out okay. I am going to a corn and apple festival on Saturday and there is a parade so I will take lots of pictures. :) I hope the weather will be nice. Right now it is raining. I hope that it rains all night. It is so dry here. There has been a drought all summer.

Jan - just noticed that you own this camera. I have been going through reviews etc of cameras over the last few days and this is the one I am planning on going for.......... I think

How do you find it - is there anything you particularly like/dislike, I can't find one locally to try so how do you find the viewfinder? I wear glasses and can struggle with viewfinders, do you find it nice and clear/bright/easy to see through?

Any comments you have would be much appreciated before I press the 'buy' button :)

Thanks!

I really like the camera. I wear glasses as well and don't have any problem seeing through the viewfinder.

Congratulations :)
That Sony is a good value for money with its image stabiliser and dust cleaner. It has more noise at high ISO than many other SLRs but it is possible Sony creates a new firmware to update the camera.
