Because of airline security, they are changing the size of cabin baggage in the UK:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_about/documents/page/dft_about_612280.hcsp
The dimensions must not exceed a maximum length of 45 cm, width of 35 cm and depth of 16 cm (17.7"×13.7"×6.2" approx) (including wheels, handles, side pockets etc.).
It used to be one standard piece of hand baggage to maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
I have no problem with not being able to carry liquids (lens cleaner etc) but that size reduction is stupid: it doesn't respect the international cabin baggage standard meaning if you are coming with your normal hand baggage to the UK, when you are going back it has to go as hold baggage. Just imagine your laptop or your lenses going there... You will be lucky if they do the trip without being damaged.
And of course my nice camera bag Lowepro CompuTrekker AW (http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Backpacks/notebook_camera/CompuTrekker_AW.aspx) isn't airline carry-on anymore as advertised on their site.
Time to buy a light nice compact camera and a tiny laptop ;)

Security is getting so strict now that many people won't want to go anywhere anymore. Here so far its no liquids of any kind, no sharpe object, nail files etc, they sure are cracking down which is good. I don't think I would want my laptop and lenses with my baggage.

Considering where I live, and the recent news stories, I for one am glad the security people are doing such a good job. On the other hand, I have never flown anywhere in my life so I cannot imagine what a pain in the rear end it must be for those of you who have to go through all that hassle on a regular basis. All I can say is that I am sorry you have to put up with all that. I just wish it wasn't necessary. :(

What a shame that they have changed the sizes. I can't see how that improves security any. The pack that I normally carry on the plane will now be too big. :(

I wonder if they are going to change to sizes here too?

That is stupid! On the upside though, I hear you get to keep your shoes on now :)

Yes, my problem is only about the new size requirement as I do not see the point. Why is carry-on luggage half the usual size any safer?
Plus they have to be somewhat reasonable and logical: a few days ago we were not allowed to have any electronic devices like laptops, ipods, pda etc because they might be used as detonators or contain explosives and now we are allowed to carry them again.
This is annoying for photographers but more annoying for musicians who can't have their instruments.

By the way, even after two body checks and not being allowed to have carry-on luggage, someone managed to bring a cellphone that rang during a flight...
If we want a 100% safe flight, we need to organise nudist flights LOL

Yes, its ridiculous! only first class can keep their clothes on :) the last time I was on a plane I was shocked to see the size of some of the carry on luggage. Usually carry was, cameras small bag etc now some people actually bring a pull carry on and there is hardly any room in the overhead. Security is okay but like you say, someone got on with a cell phone!!!Coming back from Jamica once with my girlfriend customs searched all our luggage which we had to sit on to close by the way, took everything out and NEVER even looked in our purses or camera cases.....
