View Full Version : My lens has mycetes
Douma 02-19-2005, 08:33 PM These past months i have noticed that the photos that i took with the telezoom 75-300mm were blur, faint and also i notice 7-8 marks on the photos ,i thought that it's was dirt and i called for repairing the people at Canon but they told me that it's mycetes, caused by damp and it doesn't good for me to have it cleaned,it's better to buy a new one:(
The worst is that today i notice 1 mark on my other lens 28-80mm
Now i look forward to buy a new telezoom and i think the best choice for me would be a Canon 75-300mm IS USM.I found it 510 euros cash
money money money :o
The good is that i will have a brand-new lens with image stabilisation!!!i'm more that happy for that :D
Sorry to hear about it. I think there is nothing to do to prevent that problem, unless the true professional expensive lenses.
As for the 75-300IS USM, according to Fred Miranda's web site and 33 reviews from people, it has a rating of 6.6/10 which isn't good.
http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=16&sort=7&cat=27&page=2
The IS and the price are rated good though.
You can see all the ratings for Canon Zoom lenses at http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=27
For the 28-20, you should really get the Tamron AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Zoom. It is rated 9.4 and has 33 reviews as well. It works great on Canon and Nikon and has a very interesting price.

Douma 02-19-2005, 09:22 PM No i'm not thinking about 28-80 at this time because the problem on my 28-80 is't noticed ...yet,and i have not money for two lenses.
I saw the reviews on fredmiranda, pbase, dpreview and on a Greek site today, but i think that people who use the seris "L" said it's a bad lens and people who can't afford to pay for an "L" glass lens said it's a very good for it's price
I look only for Canon lens because
1 Many of Sigma and Tamron lenses aren't very compatible with all digitals Canon(no problem with SLR Canon)and i won't to take the risk
2 my Canon TTL flash works well only with USM Canon lenses
3 The image stabilisation is more than necessary for me,because only the
body of the camera is heavy and i don't use the tripod
I Know that the quality of that lens isn't the best, opticaly is the same with the lens that i have now,but the IS is very IMPORTANT and also i can't afford to pay for a best quality Canon lens. The next model up is aroud 1300 euros
and i thing that the 75-300 IS USM considering the price it's a good lens
I don't remeber where but on someone site i saw a rating of 8/10
I'm very comfused reading all these reviews all day today, but i think i havn't several choises :(
I'm searching....
Douma 02-19-2005, 09:30 PM Olly i just put on my gallery a portrait to see the quality of my lens...before the mycetes...i was told that the 75-300 IS USM has the same quality + the IS
Please look the photo and tell me your opinion :)
The photo is nice but do you really need to go up to 300mm (x1.6 I guess with your D60)?
I see many people using Sigma and Tamron lenses that work very well with the digital slr from Canon. They might not work when they are the old versions but a change of the microchip usually fixes the problem and you are getting a new lens anyway.
Your Canon TTL flash should work with the new other lenses as well as they should be compatible. Ask your vendor for more details. At the store, you should be able to ask for a test. Sigma HSM (their USM) autofocus is pretty fast too.
At http://www.photozone.de/bindex2.html they list many lenses and for the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 I+II+III+IS there are 166 inputs:
Performance WIDE (wide open): poor (*)

Performance LONG (wide open): poor (*)

You can see a list of lenses results without all the details at

Now if you want absolutely the IS, not much choice as you wrote! Good luck! :)
Douma 02-20-2005, 04:18 AM Thank you Olly for your help! i really don't know what i have to do  my mind stucks in the IS
I doubt if i would take unshaked photos with a telezoom without tripod, from the other hand the reviews aren't good for that lens,i'm so confused.
Here is photos with that lens on pbase
http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/ef_75300_4is
http://www.pbase.com/image/31709771
Look the dragonfly,i would never be able to take an unshaked photo like that with my telezoom 75-300!!!
Also here are photos with the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX APO,very nice photos too,i have to ask if that lens fits well on the D60
http://www.pbase.com/cameras/sigma/70-200_28_ex_apo
Thanks for the good luck,i need it
Hi Sophia,
It is always hard to judge a photo when they are not full size, and many things depend on the camera and the photographer. I have seen tests where the Sigma 17-35 2.8-4 was a best buy for the D70 but was not good with the 20D and its higher resolution (and still great with the 300D).
To me, the dragonfly isn't sharp and that photo is small. I believe it would be more obvious if we see it full size. Now is it because it didn't focus well or because the image is soft, who knows?
I had a similar problem choosing lenses too. I wanted the Nikon 3.5-5.6 24-120mm that has a very fast autofocus AF-S and a image stabiliser VR. I was going to buy it but then reading reviews online I saw it was well known for soft images. They all say it's a good value for the price but I would find annoying to buy something fast, with vibration reduction, for finally getting soft images...
It was not cheap either because it was around 750 euro. I looked reviews of MANY zoom lenses and ended with the Sigma 70-200 2.8 which was the best for money without compromising the photo quality. It gets great reviews and they consider it not expensive at all (at about 800 euros I think it is expensive but compared to a Canon or a Nikon 70-200 2.8 it's "half price"). The problem is it's heavy. It does not have a image stabiliser but with a constant 2.8 the lens is fast. If you need more zoom, the x1.4 or x2 converters work well and the autofocus still works fast.
Weeell, good luck!
The EF 75-300/4.0-5.6 IS USM costs 474 euros at http://www.ac-foto.com/ac/shop/shop.php?new_sprache=eng and they have it on stock :)
Douma 02-20-2005, 09:34 PM You are right,it's hard to judge a photo when it's not a full size....i'm still confused....the more i read ,the more i confused...i think i could buy a new car easier than a lens for my camera
I have not decided yet,the canon 75-300 IS USM has bad reviews, the Sigma is very heavy for me,the lens of the serius L is veeery expensive ....i'm thinking that maybe it would be better for me to buy a Canon EF 28-135 IS USM (45-216mm on D60) and later i could buy a telezoom...i don't know
http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=10
Thanks so much for your help :)
Actually I was thinking that the Canon EF 28-135 IS USM would be better for you :D That's why I asked you if you really needed to go up to 300mm. It is much better rated than the 70-300 and you still have the IS.
But then again, if you need 300+ mm with IS, no choice!
The Sigma 70-200 2.8 is heavy but there are several other Sigma that are good on Canon digital slr too. Here's a link to a test page of a member who participate on the French forum Chasseur d'Images (the paper magazine site) and you can see many great photos with sigma lenses:

See how he takes photos of birds: http://www.pbase.com/cedric_g/matriel_et_camouflage LOL
Want to see a HUGE Canon lens? A image stabiliser won't help, probably not even a tripod, you need someone's help!

Douma 02-21-2005, 01:54 PM The photo is nice but do you really need to go up to 300mm (x1.6 I guess with your D60)?
Some times you couldn't realize something and one word from another person is enough to make a click in your mind!!
Olly, your propose helps me to see more clear, and i realize that i don't need a so big lens and i decide to buy a 28-135 IS USM and i ordered it :D i will take it in the two days :D
And as you said, i could buy a converter later
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :D :D :D :D
Sophia: I can't wait to see your opinion about the new lens on Thursday! It sounds as it is a good one, and with 45-216mm on the D60 as you wrote, it should cover most situations :)
Olly
Douma 02-22-2005, 08:57 PM I finally took the lens today :D i couldn't wait until tomorrow!
I wasn't lucky because the weather was bad, cloudy sky and i couldn't test my new lens as i want
I took some photos in Athens and i upload two of them on my gallery, hope it will be a sunny day tomorrow :D
The weather is BAD in London! A mix of heavy snow/wind/rain :D
This country has a reputation of bad weather not for nothing!
What do you think of the new lens? Does it look well build? Is it heavy? Does the IS use more battery? Wishing you a sunny day tomorrow :)
Olly
Douma 02-23-2005, 05:56 AM Rainy weather here!! i can't believe that, the last week was like Spring and just i got my lens
I took some indoor photos and i'm very impressive with the IS,the lens is about 500 gr. isn't heavy and it's well build
I'm very happy that i didn't buy the 75-300 IS USM because i asked to do a test on the shop and when i came back and put the photos on pc i saw that between 200-300mm the edge of the subjects has a mageda/blue color when the background is the sky,the same wrong that my telezoom 75-300 has.
Also the photos with the 75-300 IS USM were very clear and unshaken....the IS is impressive
....waiting the sun... :)
I have two photo magazines with 70-300mm lenses tested and all of them have their performances going down after 200mm. Even stopping down to f10 etc doesn't help. That's why I decided for the sigma 70-200 2.8 and eventually using the x2 converter if needed.
To get great images after 200mm, you usually need to have lenses like 300 f4, 120-300mm etc. I think there is a good Canon 90-300 but without the IS?
Did you see this 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC sigma lens? http://www.sigma-photo.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3302&navigator=6
It looks nice to have an equivalent of 28-300 but I am waiting for the review. I think there will be a lot of vignetting and distorsion...
Douma 02-23-2005, 07:25 PM Olly i have never taken a photo with a Sigma lens but searching on the site of Sigma the lenses that i like are really heavy!!
I like this lens very much because of the OS.APO 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX OS but it weights 1700g
Also the APO 120-300 mm F2.8 EX IF HSM /weight 2600g!!!
How could anyone holds these lenses?i would like to have a telephoto in my bag and use it without tripod
What is the weight of your new Sigma lens?Sigma 18-200 mm(27-300mm)looks interesting, and it weights only 405gr ....as you would understand i have problem with the heavy lenses :D i can't hold them
What is the weight of your new Sigma lens?
1270g, which is still fine. My camera is lighter than yours, I think :)
