Greece is among the countries that don't celebrate Halloween,i believe because the history of Halloween comes from Celts and Druids and nowdays celebrated by Catholics and Greek people belong to the Orthodox Church :) Colleen 10-31-2006, 11:47 PM Happy Halloween Everyone!!! We don't go 'trick or treating' here we go "guising" :) I didn't know the difference and i googled the word "guising".It's so interesting to find out what people in other countries do.This is what i found :) Guising In Scotland and parts of northern England, it is called guising because of the disguise or costume worn by the children. Like trick-or-treating, it arose as a Halloween practice only in the twentieth century. However there is a significant difference from the way the practice has developed in the United States. In Scotland, the children are only supposed to receive treats if they perform tricks for the households they go to. These tricks normally take the form of a simple joke, song or funny poem which the child has memorized before setting out. Occasionally a more talented child may do card tricks, play the mouth organ, or something even more impressive, but most children will earn plenty of treats even with something very simple. However, guising is falling out of favour somewhat, being replaced in some parts of the country with the American form of trick-or-treating. In modern Ireland there is no "trick" involved (neither the Scottish party trick nor the American jocular threat), just "treats" — in the form of apples or nuts given out to the children. However, in 19th and early 20th century Ireland it was often much more extravagant — for example, slates were placed over the chimney-pots of houses filling the rooms with smoke and field gates were lifted off their hinges and hung from high tree branches. Until the 1990s, Irish children said "Help the Halloween Party," but are now more inclined to use the American "Trick or treat" due to the influence of American popular culture, movies, and television. x19er 11-01-2006, 05:29 PM I didn't know the difference and i googled the word "guising".It's so interesting to find out what people in other countries do.This is what i found :) Yes it is interesting :) We also celebrate Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night on the 5th of November - so the children have lots of fun as this time of year! "Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual celebration (but not a public holiday) on the evening of the 5th of November primarily in the United Kingdom, but also in New Zealand, South Africa, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada), parts of the British Caribbean, and to some extent by their nationals abroad. Bonfire night was common in Australia until the 1980s. It celebrates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot, in which a group of Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London on the evening of 5 November 1605, when the Protestant King James I (James VI of Scotland) was within its walls. The celebrations, which in the United Kingdom take place in towns and villages across the country, involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires, traditionally on which "guys", or dummies, representing Guy Fawkes, the most famous of the conspirators are burnt. Before the fifth, children use the dummies to beg for money with the chant "Penny for the guy". Checkers 11-01-2006, 08:47 PM LOL I would have been so disappointed as a kid to get apples and nuts on halloween :p They dont do the 'trick' part of trick or treating here either. I cant wait till Guy Fawkes :D Fireworks are already starting to go off around here. I think this year will be the last that we are able to do them ourselves. People were warned if they didnt behave then they would be banned and only allowed for public displays, but there have already been a ton of incidents by stupid people setting them off and causing trouble  Im glad Lily couldn't care less about them too, makes life easier! One of my favourite times of the year is fireworks :D Its not only the kids that have fun! Great story Gary, JC is definately a smart boy. |
