Here we can post our photos of mailboxes :)

I haven't had a lot of spare time this week but I thought I should post something since this week's theme was my choice. So, while not much to look at, here are the mailboxes in front of my house.

One is mine and the other 3 belong to neighbors. They are typical of what you will find in small towns and rural areas here. They are used both to send out and recieve mail. If you are sending something, there is a small metal "flag" on the side you flip up to let the mail carrier know to take it.
I will try to get a pic of the large collection box at the post office and a rather unique looking mailbox some people just outside of town have.

Thanks for the info!i have seen these mailboxes with the flag on the side,on ttv and i wondered why the flag is there :) We have not this type of mailbox in Greece.

Not everyone has a mailbox at their house. Some use a post office box to recieve mail and send out their mail directly at the post office. This box is primarily for people sending out mail when the post office is closed.

I'm not sure why you can't open it either, it works fine for me.

I've seen the mailbox in the second picture before, probably on t.v. or in a movie. It's similar to what you might find attatched to a house in a larger city here.

Yes Sophia!! would have been a good pictures except its even hard to get down the driveway and I wouldn't want to fall with my camera.:eek:

Looks like the keys are in the mailbox! Did you notice? The mailman accidently left the keys in there!

I thought it was nice that he explained on what the little flag of the mailbox means.

I don't think those are keys. I'm pretty sure that there are 2 padlocks on that box and that is what you are seeing. I will have to look again next time I am there.:)

Lots of snow! I've seen these flags on the boxes on TV programmes and wondered what they were for - all makes sense now :)

IN Ottawa there are nice ones but I didn't have the chance to go there, also they have door to door mailboxes, some are quite nice and we also have rural mailboxes in the shape of cows, dogs, etc.

You have to go to this location to get your mail? How often do you go there to get it? Is it possible to have it delivered to your house?

Not surprisingly, it very similar to Colleen's mailbox.

It's about 4 miles from my house, but it's not too inconvenient to pick up the mail as I drive by it everyday on the way to work. Some people have to go out of their way to pick up their mail, so I guess I am lucky.

I assume they are numbered and you have a key that opens your box,correct?

Yes, the boxes are numbered and you have a key. You can also get small parcels, that is what the two larger boxes are for. The mailman puts the parcel in the larger box and leaves you the key. You then collect your parcel and put the key back in the mail slot. You can post mail as well as long as you have the appropriate postage and it fits in the slot. :)

What happens if more than 2 of you get parcels at the same time? :)

I guess someone would have to go pick their parcel up. Most of the time my parcels have been too big anyway, so I still have to go get them. :(

It looks like Colleen's mailbox has spots for 4 parcels, so they must be able to vary it depending on how many parcels are delivered in your area.

Hey Jan we have the same mailboxes! they sort of mix them up here, some have two boxes with parcel boxes and some don't. If we have big boxes we pick them up at the post office or at our Shoppers Drugmart.
